Entry #73

Gosh, another year has gone by and look, it's Hari Raya hols again. The Attic is still a place of neglect. I should change the layout colour to black just to reflect it's mouldy and stuffy nature.

Here are some updates off the top of my head. Please correct me if I'm wrong and please please do write if you've something of interest to share. This means you, Lisa, blog-neglector extraordinaire.

First, Athirah's gotten a new blog! With a nice layout! And it appropriately reflects her fascination for all things Japanese! And she updates pretty regularly!
To know more about what she's up to, head over to her blog.
Mel and I visited her at her college last month. Her college is within walking distance of Mel's place, but we still had to drive over to see her because it decided to rain heavily! (Mel, why are you so unlucky?!) In brief, we learnt that there are only six girls taking her course and that she was currently preparing for interviews with the Japanese universities (Tokyo Uni and one more I forgot again) of her choice. How did the interviews go? That's one question you'll have to ask her yourself. If all goes well, she'll leave for Japan next year. It was great to see her, though she looked kind of stressed.

As for my visit to Mel's house, we did "cool" things like play Guitar Hero 3 and Need For Speed 2 on her PS. She beat me at both games, but I say I did pretty well considering I've never handled a Playstation in my entire life.

Second, Lisa has finally ended her year long abstinence from the internet! So we hope to see more of our favourite chat queen around, right Lisa? *nudge, nudge* She claims she's been doing absolutely nothing at home and will be free till next year. I'm now free till 3rd October, so let's meet up!

Since it's Raya, we should visit some unsuspecting soul kind enough to hold an open house. Any ideas of where we can go? I know our Prime Minister will be holding an open house at Putrajaya on October 1st. Keen? Or should we just ambush Athirah instead? *ahem*

Third, Mel's currently doing a course in Architecture at Lim Kok Wing University. I saw some of her projects. They're quite cute. So in the future, you know who to look for if you need your house designed. She's currently swamped with assignments at the moment, so let's send her all our good vibes, those that we can spare from Athirah. Oh, and she's still as Arsenal-mad as ever.

Fourth, my finals are in the first week of November. I really should be studying. Instead, I'm trying to go through as many movies/shows/books as I can before I go into study mode. Unbelievably, I'm actually watching Korean and J-Dramas. It's Full House at the moment (Yes, I'm slow). I can't help but think that the whole plot is rather silly and inconsistent (like how she sustained herself in China), but there's not much else to watch since there's no TV there. Oh, did I tell you I was part of the Merdeka Square celebrations? I was on TV! :P

Other news, our Shoba is turning into a debater! She has been messaging me for help on the strangest topics at the oddest hours, but I never suspected that she was involved in something more. Her debating team recently won the ninth annual Sathya Sai Human Values Debate. Read more about it here. There's even a recent picture of her. Congratulations, Einstein!

To wrap up, I'm planning to make another post on activities you can involve yourselves in from October onwards. The idea was prompted by Lisa's current idleness, which I envy by the way. All of you can help by suggesting things that any of us can join, be it volunteer work, workshops, camps etc. And I shall entitle the compiled list as the "Get Lisa Out of Her House" suggestions list. :D

Summary Plan for Action

1. Give me a call or message about an idea for a get together before 3rd Oct

2. Make a suggestion for the "Get Lisa Out of Her House" entry

3. Post an entry in The Attic!

I hope to hear from you all.

Selamat Hari Raya

I admit this is very very late to still be sending Raya greetings, but I've been kind of occupied. Sorry!

I came back for Raya hols last Friday and am going back tomorrow morning. And this blog went back into hiatus the moment I left. Why am I not surprized?

So on to the update. I am currently studying TESOL in Kedah, if you want to write me, ask and I'll send you my address(there's no way I'm posting my address online). Or just writing me an email will do. You do have internet connections don't you?

Right. I still have to finish packing, so I'll be going soon. One week of holidays simply isn't enough! I spent most of it organising my work, so it wasn't really a holiday anyway.

News:
Su-Ann got a Cambridge Brilliant award for A-Level Mathematics (Top in the world). Read more here.

Shoba also got and accepted a TESL scholarship to study in Ipoh. That's around two hours away from my place! Maybe we'll be future colleagues. :D But no, I haven't visited her. She says her institute is small, possibly the smallest the region.

Other:
Any of you guys free during 14th-16th December? RIKL will be organising their next Introweek, so I hope you all will be able to join. It's healthy outdoor fun. Anyway, if you need anymore details, visit the website or ask me.
[Edit: They haven't posted the details yet, but just check them out, k?]

And that's all. Would write more, but I'm rushing. Hope to hear from you guys. What are you all up to? Maybe I should just dispense with the blog and write a personal email to each of you? Like a weekly newsletter or something. Haha. Ok, good luck with exams, assignments and whatnot. Make sure you give your best in everything you do.

Ideas for a post in case you have writer's block:
Anyone has an opinion on Malaysia's first Angkasawan?
What did you eat during Raya? (I tried Nasi Dagang! But can't find lemang. Perhaps Yuna would like to rectify that? XD)

MGS Canteen Day

At last! A reason for a get together!

MGS has finally decided to hold Canteen Day on the 30th of June 2007(Saturday).
Although the decision is a few years too late(for us), I think it's an excellent reason to return and find out how the old school is doing.

So anyone interested?

Joey has no excuse to refuse since she's just completed her A levels and is enjoying an eight month holiday. I've no idea what Lisa's up to, or Yuna for that matter.

If any of you are free and interested, let me know, so that I can get more details about it. For instance, the matter of purchasing tickets. They started selling it last month, but I didn't think much of it till recently. *gasp* Still, maybe Tham can spare us some if we do decide to go.

I asked Tham what she thought of our ex-school Canteen Day preparations and she's pretty ambivalent about it. Not sure if the school can handle such a big event. Guess we won't know till we go, heh.

**
On an unrelated note, MGS had their Prefect's Buffet last Saturday. I didn't go, sorry(Did I inform you all that I'm currently a prefect in my school? XD). You'll have to get the hilarious details from Shoba. Apparently, the saga of the mak cik from Kelantan who started out as a "she bangs" contestant in MGS idol(2005) has finally ended this year with her getting married to a Datuk, becoming a Datin and having a baby. The pregnancy and delivery that followed had the audience in stitches (including the cleaning ladies) and a sudden cry from a Raja Mahadi prefect that she wanted a baby too(huh?).

Other news: Estina is studying in UTM, KL, Loan Ping got a scholarship to do biotech in NUS, Wei Shuang just finished her A levels. Oh, and I went to FRIM last Sunday! :D

Sorry for the less than polished post, so how about something from you guys instead?

Stuff to do

Heads up people. Just a reminder that you should get your real SPM certs from your alma maters. I keep forgetting to get mine, despite the fact that my former school is a ten minutes walk from my current one. >< Hey, I plead not guilty as ten minutes in Malaysia's weather is like walking in a burning furnace. I swear that I get darker and darker each day.

I was going to post a list of stuff you guys can do besides studying last month, but the list got pretty short after all the procrastination I did. So anyway, here are the activites that you still can do and are worth your time:

Happy April Fool's Day

The title itself gives us an interesting question. Is it April's Fools or April Fools' or April's Fools' or April Fool's Day?

Rest assured April Fool's Day is the correct spelling. Though I still believe it should be plural for fools, after all, April has many fools...

I recall how stupid this day was in primary school. Honestly! The students yelled at each other to look at their shoes, look up, look down, look there, then cry April Fool! And there was a rule that if you tried to fool anyone the next day than you were the fool. We were such kids.

Now to the news,

  • Mel discovered that she lives near Athirah's college! What a coincidence! And it was just the other day that Joyce and I were kidding about wanting to visit Mel's house, which is also not far from Jusco. Mel says she'll be visiting Athirah after her trials. Have fun you two, I promise not to sulk...
  • Which reminds me, Mel's A levels are in May. 49 days left. GOOD LUCK Mel!
  • Lisa has been happily tagging everyone's blog with her "6 weird things about you" tag. Head over to her blog to find out 6 weird things about her.
  • Congratulations to Athirah for passing her JLPT level 3! We're so proud of you(well, I am). JLPT is short for Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Level 1 is the highest and level 4 is for beginners. So she's moving in the right direction :)
  • As for me, I've Sports Day on the 20th of April. As usual, I had to sign up for high jump. And people volunteered me for the the 400m and 4x400m track events. Even in sixth form we cannot escape this horror. lol

Well, I think that's about it. I really do wonder what Lisa is up to now though. To Athirah, thanks for the belated birthday wish!

Happy Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year everyone! Help yourselves to the mandarin oranges! Or just content yourself with the above image. *laughter* Apologies, no ang pows to give either, as I'm still too young.

Been hard at work cleaning the the house and greeting relatives. Though honestly, I want to run and hide whenever my relatives expect me to talk to them. *guilt* Did any of you see Lillian Too on television yesterday? She looks really prosperous. Chinese like to show their status by being well-fed or *ahem* plump to show that they are rich/doing well. So you can say by Lillian Too's appearance, she is pretty well off. I doubt we still do that though.

Since we have the entire week off, well I do, why don't we meet up?

Lastly, as we like to say "Gong Xi Fa Cai....... Ang Pau Na Lai!" XD

First day of the last year of official schooling

Today school reopened and I finally got to see my new class.

It was an unforgettable experience! Sunlight filtered through absent window panes to brilliantly highlight the blanket dust covering the place. The room was alive with a myriad of creatures, long-legged beauties dangled from the ceiling, corners of walls and windows were decorated with webs of every different style, insects built their nests as proof of how homely the class was, and a unique combination of moss and flaking paint patterned our back wall. Imagine our pleasant surprize(someone actually screamed with delight), when lizards greeted us warmly upon arrival.

Forget Taman Rakyat or nature parks, our room has the BEST creature comforts in school; a Biology student's dream come true.

Except that we're Physics students.

But best of all, only in this class can you truly experience what nature has to offer the natural way. The stale, dank atmosphere in the room was tastefully emphasized by the electricity being cut off, leaving us to enjoy a real sauna.

**
Alas! It was not to be. We realised that we were not deserving of this wonderful gift, and spent half the school day restoring the class to a cleaner state.

And that my friends, was how I spent my first day.
